Program Overview
- Program Description:
- This one-of-a kind program is designed to provide students with an intensive introduction to theatre in London, with English and Theatre Arts majors receiving credit towards the major. London Performance Study is also open to interested non-students. The course provides 3 s.h. of credit. The program is offered by the University of Iowa Departments of English and Theatre Arts and Study Abroad.
This program is an intensive introduction to intercultural theatre in London with an examination of the notion of "Bristishness" and multi-culturalism. For this reason, we will go to a Bollywood film or performance and discuss Anglo-Indian relations as well as Irish plays. While in England, students meet mornings for discussions of history, cultural politics, performance theory, and aesthetics. In the afternoons and evenings, the group attends plays and performances relevant to the course. Approximately eleven performances are chosen and range from the classic repertory to contemporary plays and musicals, including one or two plays at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and one - two plays at Stratford-Upon-Avon. Several sessions are reserved for special guests from the theater community. Visits to carnival designer Clary Salandy's studio, where students help to make costumes, to a parade in the surrounding area, and to other non-traditional performance venues are also a critical part of the course.
- Setting Description:
- In London, lodging for program participants will be provided in shared apartments in central London.
