Program Overview

Program Description:
Canada was the first country to adopt multiculturalism as an official government policy in 1971. It considers diversity a national asset and is proud of its cultural mosaic. Many minority groups, however, stress the double-edged politics of multiculturalism, and various scholars have argued that multiculturalism has failed to address the structural inequalities inherited from Canada’s colonial past, thus upholding white dominance. We will examine the effects of multicultural policy and the national mosaic and consider new concepts for a sustainable, diverse society from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective.

Religious Freedom and Multicultural Society How does the emergence of new forms of religious intolerance and discrimination challenge Canada’s efforts to preserve a sustainable multicultural society? Media and Minorities How are ethnic and linguistic minorities represented in Canadian media and how do mainstream media contribute to advancing the cause of a Canada that is inclusive, sustainable and fair? Nunavut Culture and Identity How has the creation of Canada’s territory Nunavut, April 1, 1999, changed not only Canada’s geography but also its cultural territory? Geographies of Indigenous Peoples Indigenous peoples’ property rights are hotly debated in legal, policy, and academic circles across Canada. How are Indigenous peoples and lands implicated in current debates about multiculturalism?
