Program Overview

Program Description:
The Department of Psychology offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) in clinical psychology, one of only two universities in Ohio offering a terminal master’s degree in clinical psychology. The clinical psychology program is designed to prepare students for further study in psychology at the doctoral level and for employment in clinical positions at the master’s level. This two-year 46 semester hour program is designed with the scientist-practitioner model as its foundation — clinical knowledge and experience is combined with research training. Therefore, the program provides a broad background in the following: application of statistics and research methodology; thorough exposure to the areas of personality; psychopathology and psychotherapy; intensive training in the assessment of intelligence and personality; supervised practice in interviewing and therapeutic intervention; and the opportunity to emphasize clinical work with adults or children while sharing common courses. An empirical thesis is required for completion of this program, and students are encouraged to select a thesis chairperson and begin their thesis during the first year in the program. Students are also offered other opportunities to work with faculty on research teams that include both graduate and undergraduate students. Students receive clinical training through course work and complete a minimum 480 hours of supervised clinical practicum in community mental health settings. The clinical psychology program is fully accredited by the Masters in Psychology Accreditation Council (MPAC).
