Street Photography: Faces of Berlin
The workshop “Faces of Berlin” will focus on street portraiture in Berlin. Beside theoretical and practical aspects related to the topic, students will learn how to approach people on the street and to gain access to them with their camera. Every student will create a personal portfolio of his street portraits guided individually during this process. The emphasis of this workshop is the visual transformation of the individual ideas and the process of editing, selecting and creating a personal approach related to the topic.
IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?
This course is for you if you are curious about expounding your vision of portraiture through Berlin's possibilities, you wish to test and sharpen your skills as a street photographer, or you want to expand your portfolio with a specific street portraiture project.
What you need to bring: a digital DSLR camera with a focal length of 24 to 70mm or more; a laptop (with Adobe Lightroom). Please let us know if you need to borrow some of the equipment from us.
Björn Steinz, born 1970 in Bad Homburg v.d.H./Germany, began his photographic career at a local newspaper close to Frankfurt am Main.
Having worked as a volunteer in refugee camps during the war in the former Yugoslavia and traveled in Latin America, he decided to study photography, earning Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU). Since then his homebase is Prague in Czech Republic.
After working as a freelance photographer and part time teacher in Czech Republic and Germany, he spent two years as an Assistant Professor at Keimyung University in Daegu, South Korea – teaching photography while working on a book about the country.
He photographed all over South Korea and in countries close by such as China, Japan and the Russian Federation (mostly in Yakutia during the wintertime). His work has been published in Du, Die Zeit, The Financial Times, Geo Special, The Independent, Der Spiegel, Newsweek, Open Society Foundations and other clients.
Beside teaching Björn works on several longtime photography projects - most of them with social content and often connected to Roma communities all over Europe.
Since 2012 he is teaching Documentary Photography at the Anglo-American University and was teaching from 2014 to 2016 at the Academy Of Performing Arts (FAMU)/Department of Photography in Prague/Czech Republic.
Björn is represented by Panos Pictures in London.
- Setting Description:
- This year’s International Summer School by University of Applied Sciences Europe (UE) will be offered in Berlin for people of all countries around the world. Be one of the international and intercultural participants and take part in a wide range of activities: In seminars, workshops, and excursions in Berlin and its outskirts dealing with different tasks of art and design.
- 1400 EUR. Includes: Lectures and Practical workshops, equipment and material, guest speakers, all entrance fees, public transport ticket for two weeks, lunch and drinks on weekdays.
