Program Overview

Program Description:
The Ph.D. program in Economics at the State University of New York at Buffalo strives to produce professional economists by providing its graduates with a modern, balanced and high-quality education in both theoretical and applied economics. The program has a strong quantitative emphasis. The department is committed to examining and improving its program and to enhancing the research efforts between faculty and graduate students. Most graduates pursue academic teaching and research careers; some work in federal, state or local government here or abroad, and others obtain positions in the private sector. Prospective students are advised that the program offered by the department is of a mathematical nature and that it is therefore wise to acquire as much mathematics as possible before entry.

The department also offers a Masters program in Economics. Students can choose from the M.S., the M.A., or add an Advanced Certificate in Applied Economics. This program is distinct from the department's Ph.D. program, and offers terminal degrees. It's objectives include teaching students innovative applications of economics in sectors of growing market demand in both developing and advanced economies, and training students for careers in business and finance, government, consulting firms and not-for-profit organizations and other organizations in the US and abroad; the program does not necessarily prepare students for entry into our Ph.D. program.
