Program Overview

Program Description:

This program will focus on the re-emergence of medicine and physiology that occurred during the counterreformation and proceeded in a fairly continuous fashion until the modern period. Fortunately, Florence is well placed to study a number of these events, including the re-emergence of human anatomy and the sciences in general. We would also be ideally located to visit sites related to the emergence of psychiatry and “lunatic asylums” as our view of the mentally ill transformed from that of supernatural possession to mental disease. In Florence we would also visit the oldest pharmacy in the world (along with accompanying museum to describe the production of medicines in this period), several physiology museums, as well as numerous art galleries, several of which have displays related to medicine.
