Program Overview

Program Description:
This course examines migration, including forced migration, in Ethiopia and the broader East African region. With a long history of receiving migrants fleeing droughts, conflicts and wars in neighboring countries, Ethiopia is hosting more than 400,000 refugees and asylum seekers from Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan, many of them seeking to move on to third countries. The Ethiopian government has long maintained an open-door-policy, which allows humanitarian access and protection to those entering the country. While a significant number of urban refugees live in Addis Ababa, the vast majority of the forced migrants are spread across 18 camps distributed in border areas in all parts of the country.

We will also visit government agencies and discuss with Ethiopian researchers to gain an understanding of the local perspective. The Payson Center for International Development offers two (2) to three (3) week long programs with one (1) to two (2) courses per location. Courses are open to Tulane and non-Tulane graduate level-students. All courses earn three (3) credits

$4,100 for one course or $7,500 for two which includes mandatory housing. (Note: Price does not include airfare).
