Dates: May 18, 2015 to May 29, 2015 Graduate Students Credits: 3 This course makes the most of its location and offers a unique opportunity for students to interact with logistics and information systems experts from the UN and international civil society. The curriculum is developed on the most recent literature on humanitarian logistics and information systems and is augmented by daily laboratory practical activities and guest lectures. Learning is then reinforced by field visits to the Rome-based organizations and the UNHRD where students can see the logistics and information systems supporting ongoing responses around the world in action. Courses will be taught at the Covento S. Maria del Giglio in Bolsena, Italy. This renovated Franciscan monastery is preserved and run by Punti di Vista, a cultural association that promotes the exchange of knowledge and culture hosting cultural exchanges, seminars, initiatives of solidarity, sharing and social transformation. While in Italy, you will meet with professionals from local and international organizations in Rome, Brindisi and Bra.

Italy is home the United Nations' World Food Programme — the largest humanitarian organization in the world and both the Logistics as well as Information Technology Cluster lead for the UN system. The innovative UN Joint Logistics Center (UNJLC), a prototype for the UN cluster system, was established by the Interagency Standing Committee and then hosted at WFP. A number of pioneering efforts in food security information systems also began at the UN Rome-based agencies. The Food and Agriculture Organization is the UN agency tasked with collecting and sharing global food security related statistics and is home to a number of early warning initiatives covering threats such as drought, locusts, market shocks, and natural disasters. WFP, with its operational mandate, is a leader in preparedness and contingency planning. The UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) in Brindisi is an excellent example of UN and civil society coordination. Beginning as a joint project of WFP, World Vision International, INTERSOS, and the Red Cross, the center has grown to serve the prepositioning and immediate transport requirements of more than 40 emergency response organizations.

The Payson Center for International Development offers two (2) to three (3) week long programs with one (1) to two (2) courses per location. Courses are open to Tulane and non-Tulane graduate level-students. All courses earn three (3) credits
