- Istanbul, Turkey
- Program Type:
- Study Abroad
- Degree Level:
- Year Round
- Program Description:
- Türkçe Atölyesi, is in Asmalimescit, one of the most historical, accessible and lively areas of Istanbul’s Beyoglu district. The centre was established with the aim of offering foreigners the chance to learn Turkish, a language with a very different structure from most Western languages, in the best possible way. Our main reason for setting up this centre was that we felt the need for a different method of teaching Turkish from those that have been used until now. We believe that teaching methods should be prepared with the mathematical structure of Turkish in mind, making the most of the teachability of this mathematical language. With our system you will see that with very few grammatical rules you can create a great variety of meaning, and you will discover that every new grammatical rule that you learn is part of a very logical and understandable structure, something that will help you to understand the language as a whole. In order for us to our work as teachers, we aim to ensure that our students to use their study time both in and out of class in the most enjoyable and productive way possible. Our school is both spacious and homely and is in the ideal location for students to discover Turkish culture and soak up the magical atmosphere and cultural mosaic of the city, as they look out on Istanbul’s historical peninsula and Beyoglu’s lively landscape.
As opposed to many of our competitors, our curriculum is modern and based on the idea that the classroom should not be treated as a separate entity from the outside world. This way, we keep the amount of actual grammar teaching grammar minimal and aim to provide a meaningful context in which the student can apply the newly acquired knowledge of the language. In practice, this means exercises such as at the supermarket, the cinema, hospital, party, music quizz, movie quizz, writing a cv, preparing an event and so much more. Also, we constantly strive to keep the amount of students in class at 8 because in our experience more than that renders too little time of actual speaking for the student, and less than can put too much pressure on the students. Our teachers all have degrees in relation to language and didactics in addition to years of experience in successfully teaching Turkish foreigners from a wide range of different professional and social backgrounds.
- Setting Description:
- Our language centre is located in the very heart of the European side of Istanbul. As our establishment is on Istiklal street, the most passed and crowded avenue in Turkey our proximity to the city's never-ending nightlife and the historical Istanbul landmark, the Galata Tower, gives us an edge in terms of assuring our students get to experience Istanbul the way it's meant to. Also, a metro station is conveniently located 50 meters from our entrance door, making it easy for our students to find and access our location. As far as our setting is concerned, the creme de la creme of our school is undeniably our terrace, which with its size and fantastic view of Istanbul is a perfect vantage point to host the numerous parties and get-togethers that we hold around the year.
