Program Overview

Program Description:

The Oaxaca Learning Center is a nonprofit organization located in Oaxaca, Mexico offering free academic teaching and learning services to students fourteen years and older. We assist students from low-income urban families and from indigenous rural villages throughout the state of Oaxaca who have migrated to the capital city to complete their studies.

The Oaxaca Learning Center's International Program permits international students to immerse themselves in Oaxacan culture and the Spanish language. They can create their own internships and participate in such Learning Center activities as English workshops, marketing campaigns for the Center, trips and cultural exchanges.

The program is unique in the world of international education as it not only promotes cross-cultural competency and collaboration but provides a humbling and empowering experience. Students work together with those who are most marginalized to create academic, social, and linguistic opportunities—as well as friendships. Meanwhile interns will be in a setting of true Spanish immersion at the center, in their home-stays and in their Spanish classes.

Program Highlights:

  • Collaborate and participate in the various projects and activities of the Learning Center, such as English workshops and exchanges, non-profit administrative work, and projects surrounding gender equity and women’s empowerment.
  • Apply teaching and learning methodologies in a hands-on setting.
  • Participate in educational and human development workshops.
  • Immerse yourself in the Spanish language through Spanish classes, non-profit work with the Learning Center, and community-based projects.
  • Connect with students from the Learning Center through activities, retreats, and language exchanges.
  • Participate in daily life with Oaxacan homestay families .
  • Become involved in Oaxacan communities, including a village stay.
  • Learn about the gastronomy of Oaxaca through hands-on cooking courses.
  • Explore Oaxaca’s incredible tourist attractions and villages, including those off the beaten path, while gaining a deeper understanding of Oaxacan society.
  • Programs can be tailored based on student necessities and university/college requirements.
Setting Description:
Oaxaca is a state located in the south of Mexico on the Pacific Ocean. The TOLC International Program is in the capital city, Oaxaca de Juarez (also known as Oaxaca City), a beautiful colonial hub nestled in the valleys of Oaxaca. It’s easy to fall in love with Oaxaca’s colonial architecture, the cobble-stoned streets and the diverse people who live there. Famous for its unique Mexican cuisine, Oaxaca hosts many food festivals and has colorful markets filled with traditional delicacies and beverages. Additionally artists and artisans flock to Oaxaca for the inspiring combination of traditional and modern art that dots every corner of the city. With fireworks going off on a daily basis, you’re bound to run into a parade or festivity of some sort in the streets or in the zócalo (city center).
