Program Overview

Program Description:
In the Craft of Fine Digital Photography: We will work through the entire digital photography workflow including colour theory, calibration, building your own ICC profiles, scanning, camera work and materials. Our digital lab is comprised of up-to-date MacPro systems utilizing current versions of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Camera RAW. For color printing we will be using Epson K3 and UltraChrome HDR ink sets on the 3880 and 7900 printers. For black and white printing we will use both Epson ink sets as well as the remarkable carbon black Piezography system developed by Jon Cone on a converted Epson 4800.

Painting and Creative Process: Two weeks of oil painting, creative exploration, furthering of technical knowledge and problem solving. We will delve into brushwork, color, line, movement, composition and space and look into the details of how great artists of the past worked to create emotion visually. There will be daily creative exercises and in depth studies of formal painting concepts.

The Craft of Watercolor: Students will meet every day to study basic watercolor fundamentals and to further their understanding of handling the fluidity, transparency and versatility of the medium. The core color concepts of tone, temperature and intensity will be explored as well as the study of color theory by focusing upon the mixing of color physically and optically through manipulating and layering of paint.

Illustration for Comic Books & Graphic Novels By combining the expressiveness of visual art and the clarity of the written word, Sequential Art, or comics, is a unique and powerful medium for telling stories and exploring ideas. From fantastical science fiction to autobiography, to hard-hitting journalism, comics can tell any kind of story you want to tell. In this intensive program, you’ll learn about the fundamentals of comics storytelling, pacing, composition, drawing techniques and tools. Then you’ll put it all into practice to create an original, fully realized work of comics art. All skill levels are welcome. An exhibit will be held at the Center to display the works produced during the workshops. One on one time with instructors and individualized critiques are part of our format. A boat trip around the local islands will be included, as well as meals in local tavernas which specialize in fresh, local produce, meats and cheeses. The afternoons will be available for excursions in to the interior of the island, swimming at pristine beaches, plein air painting and studio time. Photo students will have open access to a state of the art digital printing lab, while the painting students will have 24 hour access to painting studios. There will also be evening lectures on art history, local culture and art theory.
Setting Description:
The Aegean Center is located in Paros, situated in the Cycladic group of islands, 100 miles southeast of Athens. Partly because of its famous marble, Paros has been an important part of civilization since 5,000 BC. In the village of Paroikia, where the school is located, houses and churches gleam brilliant white and the waterfront is lined with cafes and restaurants that look out across the bay toward the sunset. The Center's restored Neo-classical facility is located in the heart of Paroikia on the old market street leading to the famed Byzantine Church of a Hundred Doors.

Immensely consequential to our program design is the sense of place. The Aegean Center has been a part of the life and texture of Paros for many years and we are proud to be included in its very rich history. Paros is not just about the past and the ancient, it is also a remarkably lively environment reflecting contemporary Greek culture and thought.
