Program Description:
Our outstanding pre-college summer program in DC is a 4-week residential program which provides students from around the world the opportunity to live and learn in our nation’s capital. In our Summer Study program held at American University, students have the opportunity to be surrounded by government leaders who create the laws by which we live. Students will select one of five specially designed tracks in either Law, Politics, Business, Environmental Science or Global Awareness and provide a rigorous pre-college experience that exposes students to the university classroom environment and interactive sessions led by professors. Beyond the classroom, visits to government agencies, area non-profits and businesses, will be led by the professors and will serve as an extension of the course topics. For the student, academic life in Washington, DC will foster personal growth and successful development of study skills, time management, self confidence, independence and community living!

Summer Study DC participants will select one “track” for the duration of their 4-week summer program. The small faculty to student ratio allows for an intimate setting and greater individual attention. Instructors take a lively interest in students’ participation and offer additional office hours for private discussion. Each track will be taught by American University professors and entail in-class lectures, as well as guest speakers and field trips to relevant local businesses and non-profits, and private tours at government buildings. Seminar classes will meet in the classroom 5 times per week for approximately 3 hours each morning. After lunch, students will reconvene to round out the experiential portion of their track with a related site visit or guest speaker. The five tracks students may choose from are: AMERICAN POLITICS, JUSTICE & LAW SOCIAL ACTION & GLOBAL AWARENESS BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURSHIP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE SPORTS JOURNALISM & MARKETING

Setting Description:
Founded in 1893, American University is one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. According to US News & World Report 2016, American University is on the list of Best Universities in the country; and with a Washington, DC location, students are provided the opportunity to use the city as a campus and classroom. An orientation meeting at the start of the program will familiarize everyone with the American University campus and immediate surrounding area. The campus offers a diverse experience, with students from around the world. The professors are well known and respected among the global academic community. For maximum security and community development, all of our participants will be housed together in one of American University’s air-conditioned residence halls.
