A nurse works under the direction of a doctor or a nurse practitioner and the main duties are to dispense medication, start IVs, take vital signs, operate some medical equipment and directly care for patients. Nurses do not generally diagnose conditions, but may report patient symptoms or changes in conditions to doctors.  The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing (A.A.S.) program enables Licensed Practical Nurses the opportunity to pursue the role of the professional registered nurse. Graduates of the program are eligible to apply to the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to sit for the exam and to become a registered nurse. Core components of the program of study include professional behaviors, communication, assessment, clinical decision making, evidence-based practice, caring interventions, teaching and learning, collaboration with members of the healthcare team, and the management of patient care.
