Program Overview

Program Description:
It is anticipated that students will enter the program with a broad diversity of backgrounds and with equally broad interests and needs. The program is constructed with the greatest possible flexibility to be responsive to this diversity. Because many communication graduate students are fully employed part-time students, all required courses in the program are offered as evening classes. The core of the Master of Arts in Communication program is five required seminars dealing with organizational communication, rhetorical theory and criticism, interpersonal communication, mass communication, and a seminar elective. In addition, every student is required to take two research methodology courses in preparation for a final research project. Beyond the required core courses, students have a wide range of options that allow for the creation of a course of study to meet the individual needs of each student. Some graduate courses in communication have a strong theoretical orientation. These include study of public address history, rheoretical theory and criticism, freedom of speech, mass communication theory and persuasion theory. Other courses have a more applied focus, including organizational communication, conflict resolution, and communication training and development. All students must complete a total of 36 graduate credits. Graduates work as teachers and administrators in educational institutions ranging from community colleges to those that award advanced degrees. Others work in a broad range of businesses and industries in positions that include sales, management, communications and technical services. Still others have entered the field of law. Surveys and numerous statements of business leaders have made it abundantly clear that success and advancement in all these areas depend upon the ability to communicate effectively – an ability that the graduate program in communication studies at The College at Brockport is designed to foster.
