Program Overview

Program Description:
The Master of Arts and Doctor of Arts degree programs provide students with a comprehensive understanding of history’s broad cultural, economic, social and political currents along with an opportunity to conduct in-depth research in a particular concentration. Both programs feature small, seminar-style classes taught by internationally recognized scholars along with access to all the resources for which St. John’s is widely known. The M.A. in history consists of 33 credits with a minimum of 18 credits in one of these areas of concentration: U.S. History, European History, World History or Gender History. Students also are expected to complete six credits in a minor concentration and complete HIS 401 (“Modern Historical Research”). A thesis or non-thesis option is available. All students complete a comprehensive written exam, and students who submit a thesis must demonstrate knowledge of a foreign language. A popular alternative to the Ph.D., the D.A. in Modern World history focuses on research, scholarly writing and teaching. Students complete 72 credits beyond the bachelor’s degree, including 12 credits in professional skills courses and six credits in teaching internships. (Students who choose to leave the program at the end of 18 credits may request the M.A. degree.) In addition to a comprehensive oral exam, students submit and orally defend a dissertation.
