Program Overview

Program Description:
The Master of Arts and Doctor of Arts degree programs provide students with a comprehensive understanding of traditional and emerging fields of literature, cultural studies, critical theory, writing and composition studies. A limited number of Assistantships and Fellowships are available. The M.A. in English consists of 33 credits. Students may choose to submit a graduate thesis or a portfolio comprising major papers and research completed during the program. The program covers all periods of literary history (medieval, early modern, Restoration, contemporary and postcolonial) as well as many interdisciplinary courses. The program is particularly strong in preparing students to teach English composition. Whatever their focus, all students are required to take a foundational course in Modern Critical Theories. A popular alternative to the Ph.D., the D.A. in English focuses on research, scholarly writing and teaching. The D.A. degree entails 48 credits of coursework, six credits of Teaching Internship and six credits for writing the dissertation (Doctor of Arts Research). Students must demonstrate reading proficiency in French, German or another language approved by the department chair.
