Our students are enrolled from Nursery class to Grade 10. We hope volunteers can stay at least 3 months and up to 5 months. Additional instructional materials can be brought by volunteers. The program provides room and board in a flat shared with the program administrator and one local student.
Volunteer duties include teaching English, playing games with students, leading learning activities, participating in sports, designing projects, and other educational duties at the school 4 hours a day. Volunteers are free to explore Kathmandu in their own free time.
The program is good for students earning a teaching degree and studying foreign languages, including Nepalese or Hindi. Work experience as a volunteer along with related assignments could be applied to college credit. The program administrator is an alumnus of Long Island University (formerly Friends World College) and has previously supervised a student in Nepal from that university's Friends World program.
- Setting Description:
- The program is involved with two schools -- each administered by one of two brothers. One school is situated in the Baghbazaar neighborhood and one is in the Dilli Bazaar neighborhood. These two locations are a 15 minutes walk distance from each other near the Singha Durbar area of Kathmandu.
- Volunteers are expected to provide their own travel and visa costs. Room and board will be provided. A program fee of $100 per month is charged to help out with our costs of supporting the volunteer. All other costs are out-of-pocket expenses that vary with individual student needs. There is no application fee or up-front cost.
