Program Overview

Program Description:
Since 1971 students have engaged the world's ocean through an interdisciplinary curriculum of sciences, social sciences, humanities and public policy through SEA Semester. Lessons extend beyond the classroom to the deck and lab of a 134' sailing oceanographic research vessel. Here students not only learn about the most powerful natural entity in the world, the ocean, but also explore the depths of themselves.

Studying the ocean and human interaction with the ocean, students undertake coursework ashore in oceanography, nautical science and maritime literature and history, followed by a practical component of hands-on marine science and blue-water sailing in the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. Students are full participants aboard in the operation and navigation of a 134' brigantine with a scientific mission and ongoing student research projects. All programming is accredited and available for any major.

Over 70% of the world is covered by ocean which affects our climate and lives. Humans in turn affect the ocean. Many undiscovered mysteries; diverse life forms, currents and topography, still lie beneath the surface. You can join in that discovery through SEA Semester.
Setting Description:
SEA takes college students to the deep ocean on a traditional sailing vessel to learn about the sea, an academic opportunity available nowhere else. The SSV Corwith Cramer sails in the Atlantic and Caribbean while the SSV Robert C. Seamans sails in the Pacific and throughout French Polynesia.
