Program Overview
- Program Description:
SYA France supports on their journey to becoming fluent in French through the study - in French - of the language, culture and politics of France. Whether a student is exploring an outdoor farmers market, dining at a neighborhood bistro or attending the latest French play, he or she is immersed in French culture the majority of every day.
At SYA France, students take five classes in French, enabling students to greatly improve their language skills while studying French history, literature, art history and civilization. Frequent field trips give students the opportunity to see firsthand the art and architecture they learn about in class.
At SYA France, the curriculum offers AP French language, AP French literature, English, history, art history, global studies, environmental science and mathematics. English and mathematics are taught in English; other classes are taught in French.
Open to high school juniors and seniors, SYA offers a U.S. college preparatory education in Italy, Spain, France or China, a nine-month homestay and intensive language training combined with full academic credit, college counseling and standardized testing (PSAT, SAT I, SAT II, AP exams). - Setting Description:
- The most important cultural and administrative center of the region since Roman times, Rennes is today the capital of Brittany and the second-largest city in western France. When SYA France was founded in 1967, Rennes was a small provincial capital. New, high-tech industry has since enlivened the city, and the population has grown dramatically with over 250,000 inhabitants in the greater metropolitan area. Les Rennais are proud that Rennes is frequently cited as the best city in which to live in France in a survey conducted by a national magazine. This honor is in part based on the fact that Rennes ranks as the safest city of its size in France and also has the cleanest air of any major French city. In addition, Rennes is the smallest city in the world with a metro system.

- A new type of education10/29/16
I took a year away from my boarding school in Massachusetts to attend SYA France during my Junior year of high school. I knew the experience would be culturally enriching but I never could have prepared myself for just how much I would learn about independence
and being a student abroad. I was placed with an amazing host family who allowed me to grow as a French speaker but, more importantly, as a citizen of the world. SYA taught me that there is so much more learning in the world than there is in the classroom and gave me skills that I know I will use for the rest of my life!

I studied abroad through SYA in Rennes, France, and I had an fantastic time. I loved my host family, my teachers, and my friends- both French and American. I learned so much from the school and from all the incredibly unique independent travel opportunities.
More than just independent travel, travel with the school was a definite highlight of my time at SYA. The class trips around Brittany, the Loire Valley, and the South of France were filled with memorable moments that truly made our entire class close friends. I highly suggest an SYA program to anyone who wishes to learn a language through fun and polarizing experiences.
