Program Description:
SCAD offers one of the largest and most professionally-engaged interior design programs in the United States. Students benefit from the expertise of full-time faculty who hold terminal degrees in the field and who share a common belief that a holistic educational framework guides future professional development and inspires life-long learning. The interior design program challenges students to become innovative designers who are capable of critical thinking and effective communication. Professional ethics and values are stressed within the context of social, environmental and global design practice. Projects include commercial, residential and institutional design, and address a wide range of behavioral, environmental, decorative and technical issues. Social responsibility and sustainability are emphasized. SCAD interior design students work with electronic design software including Revit, AutoCAD, MicroStation, SketchUp, Adobe CS5 Master Collection, 3ds Max, SURFCAM, and Autodesk Maya. A fully integrated intranet system offers online help, shared drive space, downloadable 3-D models, building use maps and access to online resources. The M.A. degree offers advanced study for those who wish to gain knowledge of design theory and the interior design profession with an emphasis on emerging materials, human response and research methods, and is offered at SCAD Atlanta, SCAD Savannah and via SCAD eLearning. The M.F.A. is a terminal degree that emphasizes design inquiry, in-depth investigation and communication for students who wish to become design practitioners and/or earn the credentials to teach at the college level and is offered at SCAD Atlanta and SCAD Savannah.
