Program Description:

Many of the key events in Russia’s history took place in St. Petersburg and several of literature’s most important writers made their homes in what Dostoevsky described as “the most premeditated of Russian cities.” The summer program in Russia makes this rich, extraordinary city the principal subject of study. By the end of the session, students will have a vivid and profound grasp of the leading role St. Petersburg has played and continues to play, in Russian culture and history.

"• Join Rutgers on excursions to cities near Saint Petersburg such as Peterhof, Tsarskoe, and Pavlovsk. • Study Russian at the Center for Russian Language and Culture, an affiliate of St Petersburg State University (Russian classes available for beginners to advanced). • Learn about the history and literature of St Petersburg while visiting some of the most famous landmarks in the city. "

Setting Description:

Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, St. Petersburg's architectural gems and urban design rival that of any European city. This far north it barely gets dark in summer, which means you’ll get to enjoy St. Petersburg’s “White Nights” when darkness never quite falls. Imagine walking the city’s canals and streets at midnight without the need for artificial light!
