Setting Description:
The tranquil, colonial city of Merida, located on the Yucatan peninsula, is a wonderful blend of Mayan, Hispanic, and modern-day Mexican cultures—not to mention colorful birds, wily geckos, and bejeweled beetles. Merida has plenty of local charm, with elegant architecture, open-air markets, a variety of museums, and delicious regional cuisine. Cosmopolitan and friendly, with its colorful folklore, Maya archeological sites and living pueblos, as well as diverse ecological riches, the Yucatan has provided memorable study abroad experiences without incident for over twenty years. In fact, the Yucatan is considered one of the most peaceful and nonviolent areas in the world.
