- Maun, Botswana
- Program Type:
- Study Abroad
- Degree Level:
- Fall Semester, Spring Semester
- Program Description:
Spend a semester living, studying, and conducting research with Round River in Botswana's Okavango Delta, home to some of the world's most abundant and diverse wildlife populations.
Round River works with the Okavango Research Institute, and a number of Community Trusts, to assist with implementing a standardized wildlife monitoring methodology in the Delta. Students assist in these conservation efforts, conducting research with local people to help monitor local wildlife populations. Camping for the entire semester in the Okavango Delta and neighboring towns, students learn first hand about the country's culture, history, and conservation policies - all while gaining valuable field skills and earning up to 15-semester credits.
This is a unique program; one that will allow you the opportunity to experience real Botswana, and to learn about conservation in ways that the classroom cannot provide. The field-based nature of the program means that our program may not be the right choice for everyone, but if you love the outdoors, seeing wildlife, camping, and if you want to take part in real conservation projects, then this program is for you.
- $18,380. This includes program tuition, research costs, in-country travel, and all food and lodging during the program. Airfare to and from Maun, Botswana, is the responsibility of the student and can range from $1700 to $2200.

- An unforgettable experience12/19/18
Round River is an incredible program who's main focus is conservation and experience. It was so cool to be able to do a real research project and understand what being a field biologist really means, especially in one of the most remote and beautiful
countries in the world. We were doing research in the Ulaan Taiga National Park in northern Mongolia and it was the most rewarding and engaging experience I could have asked for. Every day was filled with adventure and new experiences. This trip will change your perspective and your life!read moreBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
- Unforgettable Study Abroad Experience With Round River11/28/18
I discovered so much about myself and developed many valuable skills from Round River’s Botswana program. I learned more on this three-month journey abroad than I could have learned in a year in a normal classroom setting at university. The program
was academically challenging and well rounded in addressing and improving research skills, field methods, knowledge of wildlife biology, natural history, conservation biology, environmental science, language, introducing a new culture, and so many other skills. Round River as a study abroad program was organized, helpful, and provided an exceptional education experience and an unforgettable adventure. I made lifelong friends and became close with program members and the many people we worked with and met along the way. The wildlife we observed and lived among were incredible and surreal. And even more amazing were the people of Botswana. There was such a warm and friendly atmosphere in Botswana and everyone was so kind and welcoming to us. The conservation work we accomplished and is continuing in Botswana is important. As an extra set of hands in helping Botswana monitor wildlife populations, we hope to serve and provide local people with data that they can use a make decisions for their communities accordingly. In addition to the surveys and research we were a part of, our group had classes, projects, and so many hands-on learning opportunities throughout the trip. Although academics were central to this program, we had plenty of time and opportunities to eat incredible food, explore the Okavango Delta, see amazing animals and plants, sit around the fire and enjoy the outdoors, play cards, have meaningful conversations with people of all different backgrounds, and experience so many different things during the trip. I miss my Round River team and the work we were doing so much and I am desperate to go back. I am thankful to have been a part of this Round River effort and highly recommend Round River as a study abroad provider.read moreBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Studying in Botswana was an incredible experience! It gave me amazing field experience performing bird, herbivore, and predator surveys in the bush that is already helping me find wildlife field technician jobs back in the states. I'm so thankful that
I had the opportunity to study there and specifically with Round River Conservation Studies. The instructors, Kaggie, 16, and Samara, are all extremely knowledgeable, patient teachers, nice, and fun to live with. I learned an immense amount about wildlife management and conservation and the culture in Botswana, but I also had a lot of fun. I can't put into words how fantastic it is to see the wildlife there. Sharing camp with lions, hippos, elephants, giraffes, leopards, buffalo, hyenas, and all of Africa's other animals never grows old! I would definitely recommend this program to anyone- it's extremely special!read moreBottom Line:Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
