Program Overview

Program Description:
The MA Program in Modern and Contemporary Art, Criticism and Theory at Purchase College offers a unique interdisciplinary approach. The program augments critical and theoretical training with an object-based approach, incorporating into the curriculum the collection and exhibitions of the prestigious Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College’s campus museum. The MA also offers training in museum practice and theory, exhibition projects, and internship opportunities in collaboration with the Neuberger and local New York City-area institutions. MA students study critical and methodological issues surrounding artistic practices of the 20th and 21st centuries, and are introduced to the work of some of the most prominent artists, critics, and curators working in the field today through regular colloquia conducted in the first year of the program. Recent colloquium participants have included: Alexander Alberro, Ulrich Baer, Connie Butler, Jonathan Crary, Carroll Dunham, Ann Gibson, Bruce Hainley, Chrissie Iles, Louise Lawler, Glenn Ligon, Allan McCollum, Helen Molesworth, Christian Philipp Muller, Molly Nesbit, Linda Nochlin, Christine Poggi, and Fred Wilson. A combined MA/MFA degree is also offered in cooperation with Purchase College’s School of Art + Design, providing students with an eye on a teaching career in studio art a significant competitive advantage.
