Program Overview

Program Description:
We experience and understand the world as continuously in flux. This change is evidenced not only in recent events such as the economic crunch or alarms of global warming, but equally in broader and longer sweeping trajectories of cultural, ecological, economic, political and social conditions. These transformations are reflected in parallel by significant and sometimes radical shifts in the nature of architectural practice. Investigating ways and preparing students to be able to navigate this context is critical in order that they (and the profession as a whole) can continue to contribute to society in a meaningful way. The Master of Architecture Programme at the Plymouth University recognises and embraces this challenge. This attitude is reflected in how we work, where we work, who we work with, and the nature of issues addressed in this work. We believe in real people, real places and real projects; inherent in this is an engagement with the complexity and vitality that is intrinsic to the reality of everyday life, giving rise to a broadened sense of sustainable architecture responsive to cultural, ecological, economic, political and social concerns and aims. Concurrent with these values is a willingness to question, to take risks; this intent includes being open to questioning received paradigms, while at the same time valuing an understanding of and working with the past. These aspirations inform both our teaching praxis and the direction of our research agendas that underpin and inform work within the Master of Architecture Programme.
