Program Overview

Program Description:
This is an intensive postgraduate conversion programme that qualifies you to go on to take either the Legal Practice Course (to train to become a solicitor) or the Bar Vocational Course (to train to become a barrister). This is an intensive, demanding programme that lasts for 36 weeks. It is designed to get you up-to-speed on the essential knowledge and skills of academic law so you can advance your studies to start a career in the legal profession. The important skills you will learn are valuable transferable skills in themselves for other employment contexts. Potential employers also recognise those qualities that your maturity, high motivation, expertise in another discipline and, in some cases, successful work experience can offer them. This programme is suitable whether you are a non-law graduate, or one whose law degree was completed some time ago and is not recognised as current by the Solicitors Regulation Authority or the Bar Council. If you have studied law before then you may be able to get an exemption from them for part or all of this diploma. Exemptions must be obtained and confirmed before you start. While the legal authorities prescribe the programme subject areas you study, with your knowledge of other subjects you can bring a fresh perspective to your final research project. Programme content • Acquaint yourself with the English Legal System Foundation Course • Scrutinise the Law of Tort • Trawl through the minutiae of contract law • Sharpen your intellectual skills on public law • Discover what EU law really is • Pore over the basics of land law • Delve into equity and trusts • Investigate the finer points of criminal law After this you will be required to submit a law research project.
