The MA English and Culture is a diverse and challenging degree in literary and cultural studies, with the opportunity to do specialist awards in modernity or 18th century studies. You can emerge with one of three awards: • MA English and Culture • MA English and Culture: Art, Architecture, and Literature in the 18th Century • MA English and Culture: Literature and Modernity, 1860–1960. MA English and Culture To achieve this degree, you would complete our compulsory research methods module, a dissertation, and choose any three option modules from the six typically on offer in any academic year, tailoring your degree to your interests and choosing from specialist options and ambitious ‘survey’ courses. You will be supported in exploring interdisciplinary work at postgraduate level. This degree allows you to: • work with a range of specialists in different periods • shape your degree and your own learning • have the opportunity to work across disciplines. MA English and Culture: Art, Architecture, and Literature in the Eighteenth Century This specialist degree is achieved by taking our research methods module, a dissertation on an 18th-century topic of your choice, two 18th-century options and one further option of your choice in any area. This degree is one of the few dedicated 18th-century degrees in the country, and has several special features: • all modules are interdisciplinary, incorporating two disciplines • all modules are taught by specialist 18th-century researchers • collaboration with the Plymouth City Museum’s Cottonian Collection, a nationally designated collection of 18th century material • relationship with a local National Trust property, Saltram House. MA English and Culture: Literature and Modernity, 1860–1960 This specialist MA requires you to take our research methods module, a dissertation on a modernity topic of your choice, a modernity core module, a modernity option, and one other option of your choice from any area. This interdisciplinary degree draws on staff research expertise in this period. • Teaching draws on Plymouth’s well-established strengths in this period • Modules feature an interdisciplinary mixture of literary and cultural studies • You will use the unique resources in our rare books collection to do independent study • You will have the chance to work with specialist material at the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery
