Program Overview

Program Description:

This project is based at a Veterinary centre and shelter on Thailand’s Koh Lanta Yai Island. It aims to address the high numbers of stray dogs and cats on the island through the operation of a humane sterilisation program. It also provides medical care for sick, injured and abused animals and strives to educate the local community around the ethical treatment of animals and animal care.

As volunteers with this project, Veterinarians and Veterinary Nurses help to improve the lives of shelter residents and arrivals through the provision of medical treatment and care. Common ailments include injuries from car and motorbike collisions, poisoning, bite wounds, skin complaints and infections. Veterinarians have the opportunity to perform sterilisation and other surgical procedures appropriate to your level of training and experience.

Setting Description:
The project is located on Koh Lanta Yai, the largest in a group of islands off the west coast of southern Thailand. Relatively undeveloped, the island has a relaxed ambiance and many natural attractions including beautiful beaches, coral reefs, protected forests and caves to explore. It also has modern facilities including bars and restaurants and there are a wide range of culinary options available.
Cost:
From $478 for 4 weeks USD.
