Program Overview

Program Description:

This project is based at an animal shelter in Ecuador and is available solely to veterinary students and qualified veterinarians.

The shelter provides a rescue service and refuge for homeless and mistreated animals and receives mainly dogs and cats into care. The centre strives to achieve adoption of rescued pets and is highly active in promoting responsible pet ownership.

Volunteers have the opportunity to use their veterinary skills to assist the full-time vets at the shelter in treating sick and injured animals brought into care, as well as assisting with the rescue of animals in need. As one of the few animal refuges in Ecuador, the shelter is incredible busy and assistance from volunteers is gratefully received. It is strongly recommended that you know some basic Spanish, as many of the staff at the shelter are Spanish-speaking.

Volunteers on this project have the fantastic option of staying with a local family, so you have the opportunity to brush up on your Spanish while experiencing genuine local Ecuadorian culture.

Setting Description:
The project is based in the centre of Ecuador’s thriving capital city Quito. Located high in the Andes and surrounded by mountain peaks, the city was built in the 1500s upon the ruins of an ancient Incan city. Today the city is a vibrant mix of traditional Ecuadorian culture, modern bars, eateries and museums and a backdrop of beautifully restored 17th century architecture. The main language spoken is Spanish.
Cost:
From $534 USD.
