Program Overview

Program Description:
Freelancers are an integral part of the cultural and heritage sector and museums and galleries buy in expertise from a wide range of professionals including artists, collections managers, project managers and marketers. This programme aims to prepare you for a career as a freelancer. Due to the programme’s business and entrepreneurial focus, it is also suitable for those who are not yet ready to launch a freelance career but do want to acquire business skills within a cultural sector context. To ensure that you have a sound understanding of the cultural and heritage sector you take modules (60 credits) in: issues and ideas; management; and communication and interpretation. You then progress onto two specialist business modules (40 credits) that focus on the skills and knowledge you need to be a successful freelancer or entrepreneur in the cultural sector. As part of these modules you undertake a personal skills audit and write a business plan. The eight-week placement module (20 credits) enables you to work on a real project alongside professionals from the sector and to try out and develop aspects of your business plan. Finally, you undertake a 15-18,000 word dissertation (60 credits). If you do not complete a dissertation, you may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma.
