Program Overview
- Program Description:
- This MA is designed for students with a background in archaeology, history or a related discipline who wish to study the archaeology of historic periods from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. It will prepare you for a PhD in historical archaeology, or to enter professions requiring high-level skills in literacy, research and project management. You take compulsory modules that cover archaeological method and theory (10 credits), research training (10 credits), and historical archaeology (30 credits). To ensure that you acquire an in-depth knowledge of a specific chronological period or thematic area, you choose one optional module (30 credits) that covers the archaeology of a historic period. The remaining taught part of the programme (40 credits) enables you to choose from a wide range of modules. You may choose another period-based or thematic module from those on offer in archaeology or history, and/or acquire advanced practical skills through modules in artefact analysis, GIS or other computing applications, heritage management and bioarchaeology. Modules in ancient or modern languages are also available. All students complete a dissertation on an aspect of the archaeology of historic periods (60 credits).
