Program Overview

Program Description:
In the eight-week course, students will serve as interns for four days per week at a local NGO or hospital. Students are assigned a task supervisor and participate in a required weekly seminar designed to enhance the internship experience. The four-week course involves students in two educational activities: (1) intensive daily language instruction and (2) a community field project designed to address health and social welfare issues in Sosúa, Dominican Republic.

This program consists of two courses. The first, eight-week course is offered for students who speak intermediate to advanced Spanish. The second, four-week course serves to increase student capacity to speak Spanish and gain better understanding of how context impacts health and social welfare outcomes for Dominican and Haitian locals. Students live with host families while enrolled in either course.

Costs include 3-9 credits. Personal, lodging, and travel expenses connected to the course are additional to the tuition and are the responsibility of the participant. The program is cosponsored by a local Dominican University, Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestro. Students live with host families in Santiago or in shared apartments in Sosa.
