Program Overview

Program Description:
Design is problem solving. The results of the design process are both tangible and intangible, simultaneously something of use and a form of cultural expression. At its best, design stimulates and intrigues, provokes thought and fosters the exchange of ideas. It improves the quality of everyday living, enriches our surroundings and gives our sense of identity visual expression. The Faculty of Design was established in 1975 and is the largest faculty in NCAD. It comprises industrial design, ceramics, glass, metals, fashion design and visual communications design in four Departments. At both undergraduate and postgraduate level the teaching emphasis is on solving problems through projects, often sponsored by industry. The Faculty is launching its first taught Masters programme this year, an MSc in Medical Devices Design. The importance of the medical devices industry to mankind and to the Irish economy is well recognised and this new programme will provide opportunities for education and research in the design of products and services for health. It is intended to create innovators for the medical device industry and, eventually, to create opportunities for research to PhD level.
