Program Overview

Program Description:
Naropa University offers two distinct Master of Fine Arts degree programs in Theater: the MFA Theater: Contemporary Performance program and the MFA Theater: Lecoq Based Actor Created Theater program. Though the pedagogies, aesthetics, faculties and student bodies of these two degree programs are separate and autonomous, they share a deep commitment to technical rigor and innovative creation of new forms.

The Contemporary Performance program is the first graduate program integrating contemporary physical theater, Viewpoints theory and practice, and traditional contemplative practices. It is further distinguished in the areas of physical and vocal training and its emphasis on extensive production work.

In cooperation with the London International School of the Performing Arts, the Lecoq Based Actor Created Theater program offers training based on the pedagogy of the late French theater master Jacques Lecoq. Both rigorous and highly inventive, the training draws on many of the interdisciplinary aspects of theater: dance, music, acrobatics, mask-creation and puppetry.
