Program Overview
- Program Description:
Summer Discovery in Cambridge is a three or four week program where students spend 3 weeks at Cambridge University and an optional week in London. Summer Discovery affords students the opportunity to have a rich and meaningful experience in and out of the classroom. Students not only participate in academic coursework, but also in various enriching activities throughout these two wonderful cities. Afternoons and evenings are a great opportunity for students to choose one of at least five different activities and excursions taking place. In Cambridge, we visit Market Square, go on the historic colleges walking tour, stroll through Midsummer’s Commons, catch a film at the Cambridge Film Festival, see incredible plays, attend outdoor concerts, and take in the stunning architecture of ancient cathedrals. In London, we see all of the sites. Students visit Big Ben and Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Piccadilly Circus, the Tower of London, and many other amazing places. On the weekends, we go on road trips to Windsor Castle, Oxford, and Alton Towers Amusement Park. The program even includes an optional “Get Away Weekend” to Paris, France.
Summer Discovery in Cambridge features a wide variety of college credit and enrichment courses including Global Business and Economics, British Spy Operations of the 20th and 21st Centuries, European and International Law, Genetics, Acting, Debate, ESL, SAT Prep, and many more, taught by distinguished Cambridge University faculty and visiting faculty. Classes are small and personal, encouraging student/teacher interaction. Students may choose to take designated college credit courses for credit or not for credit. Credit is conferred by Marist College in New York, and is transferable to most colleges and universities nationwide. Students earn 3 college credits upon successful completion (a grade of C+ or better) of the course.
Tuition includes term fees, full academic and enrichment program, breakfast and dinner daily while on campus, Murray Edwards College recreation privileges, activities, trips and excursions per catalog/website, blanket and pillow, and linens with weekly exchange.
- Setting Description:
- Often described as England’s most beautiful city, Cambridge is also one of the world’s great academic and cultural centers. Cambridge University is comprised of 31 separate colleges distinguished by a wealth of architectural styles, grand bridges over the River Cam, and lush gardens. Instead of a central campus, Cambridge incorporates several self-contained colleges throughout the town. Students live, study, and dine within their college, but still have all of the educational and social advantages of the greater university community. London, the capital of England and the UK, is also the European epicenter of politics, education, fashion and the arts. Both the historical richness and modern sophistication of London make it the ideal city to explore. A friendly and diverse population, mild climate, numerous galleries and museums, and four World Heritage Sites make London ideal for an exciting pre-college summer.
