Program Overview

Program Description:
MT Courses are one week long developmental courses in creative writing or stand-up comedy set in beautiful French locations, taking place in March-April 2014. Until 17th September, some applicants have the opportunity to apply for full funding (course fees, travel, accommodation and all meals) through their national Grundtvig programme; see our website for complete details. These courses have been designed by high-profile practicing artists in comedy, poetry, and creative writing for adults (18+) from all walks of life, and especially those in adult education, to learn new personal/ professional skills and develop their creativity. The courses are open to anyone and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds and nationalities. Each course is delivered in English by two tutors.

Course objectives of Working with Creative Writing: The course aims to change students' attitudes to creative writing. It will show you how to write - in any context -with impact and authority. It will equip you with the skills to use language more effectively in all your communication, including writing for the web and using email. It will help you to use different "voices" to make a deeper connection with the specific reader. It will build your confidence as a writer. And it will give you the skills to pass these new techniques on to others whom you might teach, manage or support. Course Objectives of Stand-up Comedy Course: The course takes as its starting point stand-up comedy in English but throughout we will contrast compare and incorporate with the comedy traditions in students’ own countries. We will also explore how to merge traditions to create ever funnier material and how best to span those differences. The course aims to equip students with a wide selection of tools to pass on their learning in a range of settings and learning contexts. Participants are encouraged to exchange knowledge and share personal experiences with the other participants and lecturers and will be actively encouraged to enrich their creative output with their own national influences.

Setting Description:
Location of Creative Writing Course: The course will take place at Chez Castillon, large 18th century house in the heart of Castillon La Bataille near the Dordogne River in the Aquitaine region. On one side, the house overlooks the bustling, typically French street with boulangeries, flower shops and cafes. On the other, it gives on to a secluded, sunny garden complete with terrace and swimming pool. Your hosts here are Mike and Janie, both actors, who moved to Castillon a couple of years ago and who have transformed the house into a glorious learning retreat. Gus and Rory, their two friendly dogs give the house a family feel. Castillon has its own train station, five minutes from the house. It can easily be reached by plane to Bordeaux or Bergerac. The surrounding area is full of delights including the Unesco World Heritage site of St Emilion. Location of Comedy Course: Our comedy course is delivered from the Provencal village of Lacoste, from buildings now run as a satellite
Cost:
Until 17th September, some people from the UK/EU, a few other countries can receive full funding to attend the courses.
