Program Description:
Sociology aims to understand patterns of human social life in all their historical and current diversity. We seek to understand how people live, think, feel, and believe, comparing our own society with others. We are a friendly crowd, and we welcome questions and conversation. The Department of Sociology has a vigorous research and public service record. The areas of departmental specialization include maritime sociology, gender, work and development, social inequality, health, and criminology. Prospective graduate students in sociology should expect to join a research community concerned with applying a critical and imaginative sociology to substantive issues. The PhD degree in sociology is offered in three areas: maritime sociology; gender; and work and development.
