Program Overview

Program Description:
Thesis related research and graduate courses are the basis of individual student programmes. Boreal ecology and marine biology are emphasized and studies are conducted at levels of organization from molecular to community ecosystems. Although some programmes have a laboratory focus, others are field oriented, or a combination of both. Depending upon the programme, students may have access to research facilities at the St. John’s main campus, to facilities at the Ocean Sciences Centre, Logy Bay and to the Biology Department Bonne Bay field-station on the west coast of Newfoundland. In addition to supervisors with their primary appointments in the Biology Department there are supervisors who have their primary appointments outside of the Department. Examples are scientists with the Ocean Sciences Centre and with the Marine Institute, both of Memorial University, and scientists with both Federal and Provincial Government Departments including Fisheries and Oceans, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Canadian Wildlife Service, and Forestry and Wildlife.
