Program Overview

Program Description:

The Surgical Technology program provides training for an entry-level career as a vital member of the operating room team where the Surgical Technologist works together with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical team members. The program is designed to prepare competent entry-levy surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Surgical Technologists maintain asepsis in the operating room, pass instruments and sterile items and equipment to the surgeon during a procedure, maintain the sterile field, and prepare patients, instruments, supplies, and equipment before and after an operation. Graduates may seek career opportunities in hospitals, surgical suites, or surgical centers as scrub surgical technologist, circulating surgical technologist, or second assisting technologist. Graduates of CAAHEP-accredited programs are eligible to sit for the national certification examination for Surgical Technology to become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
