Program Description:
Course Information The MA in Musicology degree offers students with strengths in musicology and/or analysis the opportunity to develop their knowledge of historical musicology and their critical and research skills. The course provides a solid foundation for students wishing to register for an MLitt or PhD research degree in future years. The course is convened by Dr Lorraine Byrne Bodley. The Department’s staff includes specialists across a broad range of musicological disciplines including: ethnomusicology, reception history, performance practice, music in Ireland, interdisciplinary studies, music and text, analysis and contemporary music. Career Options Further academic study, and a wide range of employments in business and the humanities benefiting from the discursive, analytical and technical skills developed at Master’s level, including teaching, music administration and librarianship. Course Structure The programme features modules providing a strong foundation in research methodology, specialist tutorials in staff research areas, classes in advanced analysis, and an introduction to the work of leading musicologists. The MA in Musicology includes expert advice on research issues from musicologists at the cutting edge of their fields and individual supervision by scholars working in your area of research. A research seminar series, which is integral to the programme, provides an opportunity to hear guest lectures by visiting musicologists and composers. Students also participate in an annual MA research day, when they have the opportunity to present their on-going work.
