Program Description:
The Department offers extensive opportunities at postgraduate level to follow courses or to undertake research projects leading to the degrees of MA, MSc, and PhD. Students who have primary degrees involving significant Mathematics at general level may be eligible take the Higher Diploma in Mathematics. Students who have primary degrees involving a substantial amount of Mathematics or some other numerate subject may be eligible to take the Higher Diploma in Statistics. Students who have a limited amount of Mathematics in their degree and who wish to boost their mathematical background, particularly those who wish to teach mathematics may be eligible to take the Higher Diploma in Mathematical Studies or the Masters for Mathematics in Education The research interests of staff in the Mathematics Department include topics in Analysis, Group Theory, Differential Geometry, Combinatorics, Coding Theory, Cryptography, Statistical Modelling in Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Harmonic Analysis, Measure Theory, Bayesian Modelling, Statistical Computing, Classical Function Spaces, Number Theory, Group Representation Theory, Stability Theory, Mathematics Education, Involutions, Value Distribution Theory, Algebraic Geometry, Complex Analysis and Algebraic Topology. Course Information This is a one-year full-time course, though it could be taken part-time over two or more years. It provides a broad introduction to Mathematics at the graduate level. Career Options The course provides an excellent foundation for those who intend to go on to pursue the PhD. Many MSc graduates take up employment in areas such as Industry, Commerce, Banking and Finance, Insurance, Software Development, Process Engineering or Education.
