Program Overview

Program Description:
Course Information The Master of Science in Software Engineering degree at NUIM exposes graduates in computer science and related disciplines to the many facets of this complex area - the technical, the methodological, the organizational – so that successful participants will subsequently be able to lead major projects in software engineering in many industrial and commercial sectors. This course has been funded under the Graduate Skills Conversion Programme, significantly reducing the fees payable by students. Career Options Students are qualified for many jobs in the software industry. Many students gain full-time employment with the company who sponsored their work placement. Past graduates in the Masters programme have been accepted for membership of the IEI. Associate membership (AIEI) has been granted to those graduates with less than 2 years work experience, with Ordinary membership (MIEI) granted after a minimum of 2 full years work experience. Course Structure The degree is run as a series of two-week modules – with at least nine modules offered per year. In general, each module consists of one week of full-time lectures and one week for the completion of marked assignments (which may be done off-campus). This structure is designed to accommodate part-time students who are working in the software industry. Each module will be delivered as a series of intensive 1-day lectures. Each module also has associated practical work which can be completed off-site. This flexible delivery structure is designed to allow both full-time and part-time students to complete each module. Participants will be required to complete a six -month period working in an industrial environment and to present a dissertation on issues pertaining to the execution of this work. Alternatively students may opt for a research-based project that is not based on their work placement.
