Program Overview

Program Description:

Short description of internship: This company was established to develop, manufacture and market cardiac-related medical devices that address a market niche driven by the desperate need of millions of patients in the developing world. They provide cost-effective cardiac devices and their deployment systems that address the specific needs of the predominantly young patients of developing countries. Since this part of the world has no access to cardiac surgery, the company's initial focus is to develop therapies to treat heart valve diseases that do not require the infrastructure to perform open-heart surgery. The founders are internationally renowned experts in both medical device development and their surgical implantation and work in conjunction with the University of Cape Town. Their strategy addresses both mitral and aortic valve disease, the deployment devices deliver implants to the heart trans-apically, via a small incision in the chest wall without the need for sophisticated operating theatres.

Internship tasks: You should be a student of Biotechnology or Biomedical Engineering who is interested in working on heart valves. You will be based in a Heart Centre and work alongside top internationally renowned experts who are pioneers in their fields. The devices you will be working on will include both aortic and mitral and your work areas will be both research based and practical applications based. Each intern will be individually supervised and assisted throughout their internship to ensure they receive maximum exposure and have the opportunity to apply their gained skills while building up experience.
