Program Overview

Program Description:
This semester program aims at understanding both the history of these minority issues and their effect on the region today. Students will study for two months in Budapest, Hungary and for two months in Cluj-Napoca, Romania to form a broad insight into the minority issues of the entire region and to compare the strategies of the two countries in dealing with these issues.

The Lexia Program exposes students to the historical, political, economic, social and cultural heritage of minority groups in Central Europe. The Program helps students understand the role of nationalism in a changing Europe, as well as the historical and current issues surrounding the relationship between various minority groups and their host nations within Central Europe. The Lexia Program encourages students to look at these issues in a comparative framework.

The Romania program supports interaction and dialogue between Lexia participants and Romanian faculty and students whenever possible. It also encourages participation in Romanian community events, institutions and family life. No prior knowledge of Hungarian is required, as most coursework is in English. Language instruction during the first month of the program is taught intensively to help students develop the language skills and confidence to live and study in, and integrate themselves into, the Romanian community.
