Program Description:

The Lexia program in Barcelona is affiliated with The Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB). The program also includes guest lectures from the government sector, public culture, artists, architects, and representatives of the Barcelona's ethnic communities.

This program introduces students to the language, history, art, architecture, politics, economics and culture of Spain, while locating Barcelona in the larger context of the Mediterranean region. Coursework, language training, workshops, excursions, and the experience of living in a family homestay help students understand the local culture as they confront the issues facing Barcelona and Spain, including the challenges of Spanish entry into the European Union and the role of Spain in this ongoing period of transformation in Europe.

Lexia Study Abroad encourages interaction and dialogue between Lexia participants and Spanish faculty and students. Barcelona's scholars, artists, and students are involved with the program from the start, giving Lexia students direct and everyday access to the culture. No prior knowledge of Spanish or Catalan is required, as all courses are offered in English with the exception of the language course. Mandatory language training helps students to develop the skills and confidence to live and study in Barcelona.

Setting Description:

The UAB is a young, dynamic institution, and is among the best academic centers in Spain and the European Union, both for the quality of its teaching staff and for its excellent research. The University has 43,000 students and over 4,200 staff members. Lexia students study Spanish through the UAB Study Abroad Program at the Casa de Convalesencia. A variety of electives taught in English and in Spanish are offered here.
