Program Overview

Program Description:

The Research Master’s in Latin American (and Caribbean) Studies is a multi-disciplinary programme that addresses both the communalities and the differences in historical, cultural and socio-political terms between Latin America and the Caribbean region. It allows you to develop a particular expertise in the sub-regions involved: Latin America, Indo-America and the Caribbean, with a strong focus on the contemporary reality of the area. As a graduate of a two-year research master’s degree you are qualified to work as a junior academic researcher in an academic environment or carry out further research work on a PhD programme. The programme is unique in the Netherlands, as no other Master’s in the country congregates so many sub-regions of the Americas and disciplines in a single academic programme, making it the only accredited Research Master in this field in the Benelux. The possibility to carry out a short research project in a Latin American or Caribbean country makes the programme truly international. As a research-based master’s taught by staff who focus their research and teaching on contemporary regional, socio-political and cultural realities, you can view the programme as a stepping stone to becoming an expert on the issues currently effecting the region, its people and its culture.
