The programme in Slavic Languages and Cultures was introduced in 1913. In that year, Nicolaas van Wijk (1880-1941) became the first professor in Slavic languages at Leiden University. This makes the study programme for Slavic languages and cultures in Leiden the oldest one in the Netherlands. The programme is linked to that of the University of Amsterdam and offers a one year Master's programme in Slavic languages and cultures.
