Program Overview

Program Description:

The program prepares students for the expanding field of library science, which includes a wide variety of professional library skills. These skills range from the development, organization, and administration of a multimedia collection to the use of computers in libraries and the retrieval of information via online systems. The program allows students to obtain a Master of Library Science Degree and/or a K-12 Instructional Certificate in Library Science (Pennsylvania). The program is taught by the Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology. Program of Study A student entering the Master of Library Science Program must complete 36 credit hours for the graduate degree. Students accepted into the Master of Library Science Program must complete all requirements within six calendar years. I. Master of Library Science Required: 18 credits • LIB 500: Methods of Research (Library) • LIB 509: Foundations of Library and Information Services • LIB 511: Reference and Information Services in Library Settings * • LIB 513: Organizing, Cataloging and Classifying Materials * • LIB 515: Collection Development * • LIB 526: Technologies in Libraries * Electives: 12 credits • LIB 440: Selected Topics in Library Science • LIB 480: Introduction to Preservation and Digitization of Archives and Special Collections • LIB 510: Literature of the Humanities • LIB 520: Literature of the Social Sciences • LIB 530: Literature of the Sciences & Technology • LIB 531 Oral Tradition in the Library • LIB 543 Public Library Services • LIB 550 Books and Materials for Adults • LIB 555: School Library Administration • LIB 558 Librarians Role in Supporting Reading Strategies • LIB 562 Ethical Behavior in Libraries and instructional Technology • LIB 575 Teaching Function of the School Library • LIB 585: Seminar: Materials for Children & Young Adult • LIB 590/591: Fieldwork • ITC 525 Computers in Education • Or any LIB/ITC graduate-level course Free Electives: (6 credits - with approval of advisor) *If taken as an undergrad (within 10 years), an elective may be substituted. II. Extension of Certification/Master of Library Science Degree (30 to 36 credits) An online program that accommodates working professionals. Courses in Specialization (30 credits) • LIB 509: Foundations of Library & Information Services • LIB 511: Reference & Information Services in Library Settings • LIB 513: Organizing, Cataloging & Classifying Materials • LIB 515: Collection Development • ITC 525: Computers in Education • LIB 526: Technologies in Libraries • LIB 555: School Library Administration • LIB 575: Teaching Function of the School Library • LIB 585: Resources for Children & Young Adults Required Capstone Course (3 credits) • LIB 590: Fieldwork • PRAXIS II (Library Science-at end of coursework) The above listed courses meet the requirements of the Pennsylvania Department of Education to extend certification from another area to include K-12 Library Science. To obtain a Master of Library Science Degree, the student must complete the above AND two additional courses (6 credits): • LIB 500: Methods of Research (3 credits) • LIB/ITC: Graduate Elective (3 credits)
