MED Art Education: The Master of Education in Art Education through Kutztown University is tailored to provide students with the knowledge necessary to: • Demonstrate understanding of theoretical issues in art and visual culture education • Develop a philosophical orientation that recognizes the role of art and visual culture in the lives of individuals and society • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and strengthened understanding of curriculum development and instructional processes • Demonstrate critical and expressive responses to art and visual culture. • Develop a research orientation to the field of art and visual culture education 31 semester hours of graduate course work are required for those who hold a Baccalaureate degree in Art Education to receive the M.Ed. Courses are generally taught in the evenings, weekends, and in Summer Sessions that vary in duration. Graduate students can choose between one of two tracks to obtain their M.Ed. Option 1: COURSE # TITLE HOURS ARU 522 Perspectives in Art Education 3 ARU 591 Methods of Research 3 ARU 536 Curriculum 3 ARU 590 Applied Research 1 ARU 577 Independent Study 3 • An additional 18 elective credits will be taken as per the student's choice. Option 2: COURSE # TITLE HOURS ARU 522 Perspectives in Art Education 3 ARU 591 Methods of Research 3 ARU 536 Curriculum 3 ARU 590 Applied Research 1 EDU 503 Thesis 6 • An additional 15 elective credits will be taken as per the student's choice. As part of their program, all students will complete a Thesis or a Paper/Project under the supervision of a thesis/paper/project advisor and reader, after first securing acceptance of the topic by the Degree Advisory Committee. Elective courses provide students with the remainder of their 31 hours necessary for certification. Currently approved electives include: • ARU 521 Leadership in Art Education • ARU 523 Assessment in Art Education • ARU 525 Current Issues in Art Education • ARU 550 Best Practices in Art Education • ARU 570 Selected Topics in Art Education • ARU 575 Seminar: Individual Problems in Art • ARU 576 Independent Study in Art Education • ARU 581 The Teaching of Response to the Arts • ARU 5XX Relevant Institutes • ARC/ARU 572 Selected Topics in Art Seminar • ARC/ARU 571 Selected Topics in Art Studio All students admitted into this program must complete all requirements within six (6) calendar years from the date of initial enrollment in the first course with either regular or conditional admission status. Please note: The M.Ed. in Art Education is not a teacher-certification program, however students who do not hold certification to teach art may opt to pursue this certification in conjunction with their requirements for the M.Ed. in Art Education. Post-Baccalaureate Certification in Art Education The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Art Education provided for students with an undergraduate B.F.A. degree in Visual Arts who have an interest in teaching art in K-12 settings. The program culminates in a Pennsylvania Department of Education Level I certificate. Students in art education have gone on to teach in public schools, private schools, museums, and community settings. Admission into this program is during the fall semester only.
