Situated in the heart of Western Europe, KU Leuven has been a centre of learning for nearly six centuries. Founded in 1425, it is both Belgium’s largest university and one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Europe. Continuing in this tradition, HHE, which launches in 2014-2015, has its roots in an earlier MSc programme: Biosystems Engineering, specialization Human Health Engineering. This successful Dutch-language programme provides the basis for the new English-language MSc programme in Human Health Engineering with the aim of attracting excellent international students to this unique programme at KU Leuven. HHE is supported by and embedded in the research activities of four KU Leuven faculties, each with a strong expertise in the different aspects of human health engineering: Bioscience Engineering, Engineering, Medicine, and Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences. The Faculty of Bioscience Engineering leverages state-of-the-art expertise in developing technology for complex biological systems, including human applications. The Faculty of Engineering performs world-leading research in developing hardware as well as signal analysis methods for real-time monitoring of human body functions. The Faculty of Medicine, with its research hospital, offers world-class research expertise on human health application. The Faculty of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences conducts state-of-the-art experimental and theoretical research in the fields of sports, injury prevention and rehabilitation. The programme maintains close collaborations with experts from these faculties and also works closely with IMEC, which performs world-leading research in nanoelectronics.
